What risk factors increase blood pressure?
12.30.2023

Blood pressure does not always keep the same index but will change depending on our activities and emotions at that moment. Even just a small activity such as changing position, posture, drinking coffee or smoking, eating salty, being touched ... will also cause blood pressure to rise.

Blood pressure is the blood pressure in the arteries, which is a telltale parameter of the health situation. Hypertension index is when there is a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or more or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or more. Here are the risk factors for hypertension:

- High salt diet

Eating a lot of salt is a very common factor that raises blood pressure in public life. The recommended amount of salt in the meals of a person with hypertension is not to exceed 6 grams a day, which is the equivalent of one teaspoon. Therefore, a pale diet is an important way to help prevent and treat hypertension. For people in the prehypertensive stage, just eating lighter, less seasoning can keep blood pressure stable. For people who already have the disease, this regimen helps reduce blood pressure by an average of 4 to 8 mmHg.

- Dyslipidemia

When blood fat levels are high, the arterial system is always subjected to large blood flow pressure, the endothelium in the lumen of the arteries is damaged and hardened, depositing atheromatous plaques, reducing the loss of elasticity, thereby increasing blood pressure. Therefore, following a lifestyle and diet to control blood lipids is extremely necessary, by reducing the consumption of unhealthy fats, adding green vegetables, grains, fruits to the daily diet is a way to delay vascular sclerosis,  stabilizes blood pressure.

- Age

As you age, the walls of blood vessels age and harden, reducing elasticity, so the pressure in the lumen of the vessels will increase. From there, blood pressure in older people will be higher than when they were younger. Accordingly, age is an irreversible risk factor for hypertension. However, knowing how to limit other factors that increase blood pressure will partly help stabilize blood pressure sustainably over time.

- Family history

Many observational studies show that children born to parents with high blood pressure in particular or other cardiovascular diseases in general will have a higher risk than the average person. Thus, similar to age, family history is also a factor that cannot be erased. These subjects need to be actively examined for early detection to prevent cardiovascular events before unfortunate occurrences.

- Sedentary lifestyle

People with regular exercise habits will help enhance the metabolism and consumption of cholesterol. If sedentary, the risk of dyslipidemia increases, reducing sugar tolerance causes diabetes mellitus and indirectly increases blood pressure. Therefore, in the treatment regimen for hypertension, doctors always encourage patients to exercise regularly, at least 30 minutes / day and at least 5 days / week, avoid sitting continuously for long periods of time.

- Cigarette smoking

In particular, the cardiovascular system suffers the most. It is the nicotine substance of tobacco that causes nervous excitability, promotes sympathomimetic strength, causes vasoconstriction and hypertension. Moreover, the dangers posed by tobacco not only affect individual smokers but also those around them who inhale secondhand smoke, especially the elderly and children.

- Drinking too much alcohol

Like the nicotine in cigarettes, alcohol is also a toxin of the cardiovascular system. Too high an alcohol concentration in the blood affects metabolic processes, increases blood lipids, damages the vascular system, causes cardiovascular pathologies, including hypertension. However, unlike smoking, alcohol is not recommended to be abstained from abstinence, but should be consumed in controlled doses.
Thus, in addition to adherence to hypertension treatment, the prevention of the above factors is also an important thing to keep blood pressure stable. Regularly measure blood pressure at home to know the health status and have timely intervention, avoiding possible unfortunate consequences.
