Prevention of hand, foot and mouth disease for individuals and communities

Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by viral strains of the intestinal virus family (collectively called Enteroviruses). Two groups of common agents are Coxsackie A16 and Enterovirus 71 (EV71).

This is a group of viruses with enduring vitality. It is capable of surviving from cold to very high temperatures: In 30 minutes the new virus is inactivated at 560 degrees Celsius; At cold temperatures of - 40 degrees Celsius, the virus can survive up to 3 weeks in the environment. Surfaces in common living environments where people are sick are often places that contain the virus, such as eating utensils, tabletops, chairs, beds, shared toys ...

Early detection of hand, foot and mouth disease in children is one of the important conditions affecting the treatment process.

Most children with hand, foot and mouth disease, if detected early and closely monitored, will have a gentle course of treatment, prevent complications and limit the risk of death.

Personal disease prevention

- Each individual forms a hand hygiene habit and culture, training children in the habit of proper hand hygiene with soap.

- Children must be kept out of school, isolated from healthy and sick children to avoid spreading.

- Supervise the activities of sick children in daily activities.

Prevention of diseases for children in the family and community

- Isolate children from people or children who are sick and limit their access to crowded places where there is an epidemic.

- Instruct children to clean and sanitize their hands after returning from crowded places, before eating and drinking and after going to the toilet.

- Maintain scientific living environment hygiene, regularly wash clothes, disinfect toys, drinking cups, bowls and chopsticks ... of the child.

- Instruct children to brush their teeth every day and maintain proper physical hygiene.

- Get all the necessary nutrients from healthy, vitamin-rich foods, enough water ... for children.

- For infants, breastfeed for at least the first 6 months and use appropriate formulas for infant development and immunity strengthening.

- Immunize children fully as recommended to effectively protect them against pathogens.

- Take children to regular check-ups to control their health, proactively prevent and treat diseases early.
